BIG EAST RECRUITING UPDATE: MARQUETTE
November 8, 2006
VERBAL COMMITMENT ALERT: Damian Saunders(F), Notre Dame Prep
Article from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Saunders' commitment: Forward Commits to Join MU Next Season.
Projected 2007-2008 Roster:
Seniors: Ousmane Barro (C), Dan Fitzgerald (F), Lawrence Blackledge (F)
Juniors: Wesley Matthews (WG), Dominic James (PG), Jerel McNeal (SG), Dwight Burke (BF)
Sophomores: David Cubillan (G), Lazar Hayward (G/F), Maurice Acker (PG)
Freshmen: Scott Christopherson (G), Trvor Mbakwe (PF), Patrick Hazel (F), Damian Saunders (F)
2008 Early Commit: Nick Williams (SG)
Marquette headed back East to again to add a 4th member of the 2007 recruiting class as they pluck Connecticut native Damian Saunders from Notre Dame Prep, the same school they landed Lazar Hayward last season. Saunders is an athletic combo forward who looks like a '3' now, but plays (and has the skill set) of a '4'. It is a surprising commitment following Patrick Hazel's from last month.

Saunders has always been one of those 'fringe' guys on the Big East recruiting radar screen. Everyone loved his athletic ability, but not sure what position he would settle in at. In the end, Marquette decided to take a chance and offer him a scholarship and he accepted their offer over the chance to stay closer to home and play at Providence.
Saunders visited Marquette a couple weeks ago and decided to commit to his favorite school. With Saunders joining a class of Patrick Hazel, Trevor Mbakwe and Scott Christopherson, on paper, the Golden Eagles have 'over-recruited' their class and now stand at 14 scholarship players on the roster. This could be a form of indication on Dominic James' plans for the future, which could very well include the NBA draft after his sophomore season.
With an early commitment from Nick Williams for 2008, it looks like Marquette has at least two more scholarships for the 2008 class, but will also watch the NBA draft stock of sophomore Dominic James, but with Maurice Acker sitting out this season, they definitely look to have their contingency plan in place.
